In loving memory of my father,
Andy Haakenson, the visionary behind Friends of Sabine Park (FoSP). Dad’s legacy lives on through our collective commitment to safeguard the cherished Sabine Park at 201 Sabine Avenue, a haven he dedicated decades to preserve for Narberth’s present and future generations.

Dad’s commitment extended beyond familial ties, encompassing his entire Narberth neighborhood and Lower Merion Township. A seasoned commercial real estate appraiser, Andy’s keen insight into land dealings and development allowed him to recognize when private interests threatened the integrity of public spaces. Among these, Sabine Park stood tall, situated on the highest point in Narberth, boasting the distinction of being one of the town’s two playgrounds with ample open, green space.

Over several decades, Andy invested significant time and resources to ensure that Sabine Park remained a sanctuary for all. His dedication was not only to his family but also to the broader community, evident in his 8-year service on the Narberth Borough Council, 10 years on the Narberth Fire Company Board, 10 years on the Narberth Community Library Board, and 4 years on the Narberth Industrial Development Authority (NIDA). Active participation in Friends of Sabine Park was a natural extension of his commitment to community well-being.

Despite Andy’s passing in February 2022, his call to action resonates even more profoundly today. Narberth has experienced changes and ongoing development, some of which, like the Narberth bridge project, remain incomplete or unaddressed. As his daughter and a dedicated Board member of FoSP, I am steadfast in my commitment to ensuring Sabine Park’s protection and its role as a vital public space for Narberth’s families and future generations.

Sabine Park, with its unique position and ADA compliance, is more than just a playground; it’s a symbol of unity, community, and mental well-being. My vision aligns with my father’s dream – seeing people of all generations engaged in outdoor activities, fostering connections, and celebrating the spirit of Narberth. I spent countless hours at Sabine Park with my Dad, and now, with my children, continuing the tradition of connecting with families who share the love for this green haven.

As we move forward, Friends of Sabine Park will spearhead a calendar of events for the 2024 spring and summer, reinforcing our commitment to the park’s protection and community engagement. In this journey, transparency is paramount, mirroring my father’s accessibility and dedication. I am devoted to expanding our website, fostering a grassroots coalition, and maintaining an open dialogue with the community about FoSP’s purpose and endeavors.

Sabine Park, treasured by Narberth residents and utilized by people of all ages, serves as a hub for social interaction, sports, and communal well-being. It stands as a testament to the spirit of Narberth—a sentiment we aim to preserve and amplify. Join us in this endeavor, ensuring Sabine Park remains a cornerstone of Narberth’s identity, a sanctuary for connection, and a beacon for generations to come.

In memory and in action,

Leigh Haakenson
